How to Add a GST Number in Tally ERP 9 (and Change It Later)

How to add a GST number (GSTIN) in Tally ERP 9 - at company creation or later - plus party ledger GST details, common state-code errors and why TSS status matters.

Adding a GST number in Tally ERP 9 is a two part job: the company needs GST enabled and a GSTIN on record, and then every relevant party ledger needs its own GST details. Miss the second part and the tax on your invoices quietly goes wrong.

Step 1 - enable GST for the company:

  • •Open the Gateway of Tally
  • •Press F11: Features, then F3: Statutory & Taxation
  • •Set "Enable Goods and Services Tax (GST)" to Yes

Step 2 - add the GSTIN:

  • •For a new company, Tally ERP 9 asks for the GST registration details during company creation. Enter the GSTIN, the registration type (Regular, Composition, Unregistered or Consumer) and the state
  • •For an existing company, open F3: Cmp Info from the Gateway of Tally and alter the company. Set the GST details to Yes, enter the GSTIN, registration type and state, and save

Step 3 - check the state code. The first two digits of a GSTIN are the state code, and the place of supply on your invoices follows it. A wrong state code is the most common reason Tally ERP 9 rejects or misreports a GSTIN, and it is easiest to fix immediately after entry rather than at return time.

Step 4 - fill in party ledger GST details. Open each party ledger and complete the GST and other statutory details: the party GSTIN and registration type. Inter-state supply, reverse charge on unregistered purchases and input credit all read from these fields.

Changing a GST number later is the same path in reverse: alter the company, replace the GSTIN, save, and reprint or re-check an invoice to confirm the new number is being picked up. If your GSTIN changed because of a business restructuring, review the party ledgers and stock items afterwards as well.

One thing to plan for while you are on Tally ERP 9: Tally has discontinued TSS renewal for Tally ERP 9, so updates and compliance releases for that release have an end point. If your GST filing depends on being current, check your TSS status and confirm your upgrade path to TallyPrime before a filing deadline forces the decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about this topic.

Where do I enable GST in Tally ERP 9?

From the Gateway of Tally open F11: Features, then F3: Statutory & Taxation, and set "Enable Goods and Services Tax (GST)" to Yes. Only after GST is enabled does Tally ERP 9 ask for registration details and show the GST reports.

How do I add the GST number to an existing company?

Open the Gateway of Tally, go to F3: Cmp Info and alter the company. In the company alteration screen, set the GST details to Yes and enter your GSTIN, registration type and state, then save. The change applies to new vouchers from that point.

Why is Tally not accepting my GSTIN?

The usual causes are a wrong state code in the first two digits of the GSTIN, a registration type that does not match the number, or a mismatch between the company state and the GSTIN state. Correct the GSTIN against your certificate rather than retyping it from memory.

Do I need GST details on party ledgers as well?

Yes, for correct tax treatment. Open the party ledger and fill in the GST and other statutory details - the party GSTIN and registration type (Regular, Composition, Unregistered or Consumer). Inter-state supply, reverse charge and unregistered-dealer purchases all depend on those fields being right.
