GST in Tally Prime: Setup, Invoicing and GST Reports

Enable GST in TallyPrime 7.2, configure ledgers with HSN/SAC and GSTIN, raise GST invoices and produce GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GST reports.

GST setup, invoicing and reports in Tally Prime

GST is built into TallyPrime 7.2 - there is no separate GST add-on to buy. Once GST is switched on in Company Features, TallyPrime adds GST fields to your masters and vouchers, prints GST-compliant invoices, and produces the statutory reports you need for filing.

1. Enable GST in Company Features

Press F11 (Company Features) and switch on the GST options you need. Every option is independent, so most businesses enable plain GST first and add e-Invoicing or e-Way Bills later.

OptionWhat it turns onWhen you need it
Maintain GSTGST fields on ledgers and vouchers, plus the GST report setEvery GST-registered business
Maintain GST with TDSTDS deducted on GST payments, with reporting for itBusinesses that deduct TDS while paying GST
Maintain GST with TCSTax collected at source on GSTBusinesses receiving large GST payments from registered buyers
Enable e-InvoicingIRP invoice numbering and IRN capture on invoicesTurnover above the notified e-Invoice threshold (Rs 5 crore)
Enable e-Way Billse-Way Bill details on sales and purchase documentsGoods movement above the notified e-Way Bill threshold (Rs 50,000)

Accept the screen with Ctrl+A. The change applies to the company immediately.

2. Create the ledgers that GST needs

Ledger typeWhere it goesKey settings
Party ledger (customer / supplier)Any of the normal groupsEnable GST = Yes, Applicable for = Goods or Services, HSN code or SAC, GSTIN and State for registered parties
GST output ledgers (CGST, SGST, IGST at each rate)Duties and TaxesOne ledger per rate, for example GST 5, 12, 18 and 28
Input tax credit ledgers (Input CGST, Input SGST, Input IGST)Duties and TaxesWithout these, the tax you pay on purchases is treated as an expense instead of a credit
Non-GST ledgersNormal groupsLeave Enable GST = No so that no tax is calculated against them

Set the HSN code to the number of digits the law asks for (2, 4, 6 or 8) and make sure the state on the party ledger matches the state in its GSTIN - a mismatch is the most common reason for a wrong tax split.

3. Raise a GST invoice

  1. Press F8 for a Sales voucher and pick the customer ledger.
  2. Enter the item name, quantity and rate. The GST rate and HSN/SAC flow in from the ledger setup.
  3. Check the tax split - CGST plus SGST for an intra-state sale, IGST for an inter-state sale.
  4. Press Alt+P to print. Choose Original for Recipient, Duplicate for Transporter or Counterfoil.
  5. Set invoice numbering under F11 > Accounts Info > Invoice Numbering so every invoice number is generated and reused consistently across the GST reports.

A GST invoice must carry the supplier GSTIN, the buyer GSTIN and state, a sequential invoice number and date, the HSN/SAC, the taxable value, the tax split and the total. The printed invoice from TallyPrime already carries all of these.

4. Work with the GST reports

Gateway of Tally > Display > Statutory Reports > GST Reports gives you GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GST Summary, GST Invoice details and the input tax credit reconciliation. Press Alt+E on any report to export it to Excel, XML or JSON, which is how most accountants hand data to their filing software.

Downloading GSTR-2A and GSTR-2B from the portal, e-Invoice and e-Way Bill utilities all need an active TSS. When TSS expires, TallyPrime keeps your accounting working but those statutory utilities are restricted until it is renewed.

Step-by-Step Examples

Intra-state GST sale

  1. Enable GST in Company Features (F11) and accept with Ctrl+A
  2. Create the customer ledger with Enable GST = Yes, HSN/SAC and GSTIN
  3. Create GST ledgers for each applicable rate under Duties and Taxes
  4. Press F8, select the customer, enter item, quantity and rate
  5. Verify CGST and SGST split, then print with Alt+P
  • Inter-state sales show IGST instead of CGST plus SGST
  • Create input tax credit ledgers before your first purchase voucher

FAQs

How do I enable GST in TallyPrime 7.2?

Press F11 to open Company Features, switch on Maintain GST in the GST section, enable e-Invoicing or e-Way Bills if you need them, then accept with Ctrl+A.

Where do I enter the HSN code in Tally Prime?

While creating the ledger (Enable GST = Yes, then Applicable for and the HSN/SAC field) and on the voucher line when the ledger does not already carry one.

How do I generate GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B from Tally Prime?

Go to Display > Statutory Reports > GST Reports, pick GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B, set the period and press Alt+E to export to Excel, XML or JSON.

Why is the e-Way Bill option unavailable in Tally Prime?

e-Way Bills must be enabled in Company Features and they need an active TSS. If TSS has expired, the statutory utilities are restricted until it is renewed.

No. GST, TDS and TCS are built into TallyPrime 7.2. The statutory download and e-Invoice utilities need an active TSS, not an add-on.
